As I was finishing writing Effective Remote Work, I started working for Shopify.
One of the key reasons that I was attracted to the company—aside from the mission and our impact on the economy—was that it was a fully remote company. Internally at Shopify, we call our remote practices Digital by Design.
I recently wrote a piece for the Shopify Engineering blog outlining some of the highlights of the ways that Shopify does remote working, of which some I’ve wrapped using the “spectrum of synchronousness” model that is introduced in the book.
I hope that you like the piece. It touches upon some of the best parts of Shopify’s remote engineering culture, such as treating everyone as remote, the Vault, livestreams, establishing norms, and staying connected to each other.
And if you’d like to explore any of these topics in more detail, then check out Effective Remote Work.
